Permit Granted for Excavation, Hauling

8-1-95

Brandon - Markowski Excavating of Florence has

received an Act 250 permit to remove up to 50,000

cubic yards of sand and gravel per year from a

re-activated pit purchased by OMYA Corp.

Located near the intersection of Route 7 and

McConnell Road, the area had formerly been a popular

site for target shooting and all terrain vehicle use,

despite "no trespassing" signs. The land also

encompasses a wooded area that the Brandon Rotary once

maintained as a picnic site.

Now up to 125 truck loads of material may leave

the pit every day, with a traffic officer required

when the daily traffic exceeds 85 trucks. Operations

can take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday

through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday except

on federal holidays.

There will be no stone crushing or blasting

without an amendment to the Act 250 permit.

If sand from the trucks creates a nuisance or

danger on highways, the District 1 Environmental

Commission can convene another public hearing to

address the problem.

The permit runs until the year 2020. Brandon's

zoning board had already granted the project a

conditional use permit.
