What Can You Do?
by Annette Smith (Executive Director of Vermonters for a Clean Environment, Inc.)
Fall foliage peaked in the past week in this part of Vermont. If OMYA succeeds in opening their new mine in the Danby Four Corners valley, this scenic valley will contain a giant white scar over the course of the next 100 years.
What Can You Do?
- If you live in or pay taxes in Danby, write to the Danby Selectboard, Town of Danby, P.O. Box 231, Danby, Vermont 05739.
- If you care about Vermont, write to Governor Howard Dean, 109 State Street, Montpelier, Vermont 05609.
- Contribute to VCE. We are engaged in a campaign to raise enough money to challenge OMYAs eventual Act 250 application. Competing with OMYAs deep pockets will be expensive. Make checks payable to VCE and send your tax-deductible contributions to VCE, 789 Baker Brook Rd., Danby, VT 05739.
Pipeline Safety Legislation
Pipeline Safety advocates succeeded in defeating the weakened Senate bill that would have reauthorized the Office of Pipeline Safety for 3 years.

Heavy industry lobbying over the past few months resulted in a bill that was strongly supported by industry but was viewed by pipeline safety advocates as a feel-good bill for politicians that made no meaningful changes in the cozy relationship between OPS and the industry. Rep. Oberstar has introduced a much stronger bill that is currently in the House. Write to your Representative and encourage passage of Rep. Oberstars bill this session.
