OMYA will pay $8,000 for spills

WATERBURY -- OMYA Inc. has agreed to pay $8,000 related to violations of its water discharge permit.

According to the Agency of Natural Resources, OMYA had three significant unpermitted discharges of calcium carbonate during a five-month period beginning in late 1999.

Although the company reported the incidents, the state said the discharges of calcium carbonate from the Florence plant entered Smith Pond and its tributaries.

OMYA agreed to comply with the conditions of its discharge permits and paid a civil penalty of $1,500.

The company agreed to pay an additional $6,500 to fund a supplemental environmental project.
