Nober named STB chairman

Roger Nober has been designated Surface Transportation Board (STB) chairman, replacing Linda J. Morgan. Commissioner Morgan will continue to serve as a Member of the Board.

Nober was nominated as a board member by President Bush on July 18, 2002, for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2005. He was confirmed by the Senate on Nov. 14 and sworn in Dec. 2.

Prior to joining the board, Nober was counselor to the deputy secretary of transportation. From 1997-2001, he served as chief counsel for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Previously, he was counsel to the House Subcommittee on Surface Transportation for the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (1995-97) and minority counsel to the House Subcommittee on Surface Transportation of the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation (1993-94).

Noting the important function served by the STB, NMA President and CEO Jack N. Gerard said the association “looks forward to working with Chairman Nober and all STB board members on issues and challenges of significance to the mining industry.”
