Unfortunately, this slide show is not just a lesson in ecology. For the plants and animals of Rice Woods, it is a matter of survival. Most of the area encompassed by these woods may soon be replaced by houses, paved streets and utility poles. During the construction, the quietude of this lovely, peaceful tract will be shattered by the roar of bull-dozers, the explosions of dynamite, and other heavy-duty earth-moving equipment. Hundreds of years of unique Vermont natural-history will be lost forever. Instead of the beautiful, rich, diverse ecosystem that exists at Rice Woods now, this is what we'll have after development - grassy lawns with dandelions and other weeds. Rice Woods deserves a better fate than this. |
