Rice Woods is also special for a variety of wildlife, including bobcats, which often live on or near cliffs. These remarkable night photos were taken by Shelburne resident Tom Couture using flash units that were triggered by motion detectors. These bobcats were photographed at the top of the cliffs at the western edge of Rice Woods. Studies conducted by animal trackers in Shelburne have identified a number of sites in town where bobcats have been sighted. Rice Woods plays a crucial role in connecting natural habitats for bobcats on both sides of Route 7. It is feared that dogs belonging to residents of the proposed housing development would further reduce habitat for bobcats and provide a barrier for their migration across town. |
